Dear Teacher/Facilitator of Choosing the Best WAY,

icon wayThere have been some recent medical updates that need to be incorporated into your teaching of Choosing the Best WAY. Choosing the Best WAY has been reviewed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Administration for Children and Families, and found to be medically accurate with these modifications, outlined below:

Student Manual/Leader Guide

1) On page 27, in the paragraph about “risks” in the HPV section, please add the following information about the availability of an HPV vaccine that was recently developed for males:

“Males are now also eligible for the HPV vaccine.”

www.cdc.gov/std/HPV/STDFact-HPV.htm

2) Also on page 27, in the first paragraph in the Genital Herpes section, please replace the statement that “nearly 1 in 4 people aged 12 or older have genital herpes” with these more recent statistics:

“According to the CDC, approximately 1 in 5 women (aged 14 to 49), 1 in 9 males (aged 14 to 49) and 1 in 6 people (aged 14 to 49) are infected with genital herpes.”

DVD/WAY full presentation and/or WAY Lesson 2

1) During the WAY full presentation Lesson 2, at minute 7:36, (or in WAY lesson 2, at 40 seconds) a person states that every 11 seconds, someone is infected with an STD.  Please pause the video and state the more current statistic:

“According to the CDC, half of the estimated 19 million new STD cases that occur in the U.S. each year are among young people aged 15 to 24, which would be one young person every 3 seconds getting diagnosed with an STD.” (19 million/2/365 days/24 hours/60 minutes/60 seconds)

Please also note this important information about using endnotes in all Choosing the Best curricula:

Student Manuals

All references for material contained in the Choosing the BestStudent Manuals are contained in endnotes at the back of the Student Manual.

Leader Guides

All references for material contained in “wrap around text” (the text that flows around the embedded corresponding Student Manual page) of the Leader Guides are contained in endnotes at the back of the Leader Guide.   Because there is additional information provided in the Leader’s Guide that is not in the Student Manual, the number and ordering of the endnotes in each of these books is slightly different.  So if you are using the Leader Guide but referencing information that is actually from the Student Manual (even in the embedded Student Manual pages from the Leader Guide), you must go to the back of the actual Student Manual to get the correct reference.
